Soil acidity as a limiting factor of corn yields in the eastern Croatia
The aim of this study was to test ten corn hybrids in the 1999 and 2000 growing season on soils which differed in pHKCl (Bizovac cambisol = 6.07 ; Luzani pseudogley = 4.77). Corn was grown in four replicates (experimental plot 14 m2). Grain yields were 10.52 and 9.30 t ha-1 for 1999 and 2000, respectively. The amount of precipitation for the period between May and September was 475 mm in 1999, whereas it was only 127 mm in 2000. (Osijek Weather Bureau). Corn yield on acid soil was 39% lower than on neutral soil (2-year means: 7.50 and 12.31 t ha-1, respectively). Yield decrease of 52% on acid soil was found for 1999.
