Surgical treatment of hepatic hydatid cysts
Aim. Hepatic echinococcosis as an endemic disease in the Mediterranean region is a serious problem, and since no effective parasiticide is known, it continues to be surgical problem. This study shows that radical surgical resection of the hepatic hydatide cysts is a method of choice. Methods. Among 19 patients operated in three years period in Dubrava University Hospital Zagreb, in 10 patients partial pericystectomy was performed, while in 9 patients total cystopericystectomy was done. Results. With no mortality at all, in first group two postoperative recurrences and one peritonitis occurred, while in the second group no postoperative complications were found at all after follow up 1.5 – 3 years. Conclusions. Regarding small groups of patients, we still consider total cystopericystectomy as the method of choice and a safe treatment of hepatic hydatide cysts.
