Determination of C, N and O depth profile in some steel using nuclear backscattering analysis
Gas and Plasma nitriding were applied to some kind of steels, such as Aisi-304 and H-13 used in industry, in order to improve their hardness and the corrosion resistance of their surface. This improvement is correlated with the depth profile of Nitrogen and the consequent structure variations. The Non-Rutherford or Nuclear Backscattering Spectroscopy NBS is performed on different samples, before and after nitriding, to determine the stoichiometry and the thickness of the surface layers. Both the mechanical properties and the depth profile of C, N, and O are investigated. For this aim, beam energy of 5 MeV alpha particles, from the 5SDH tandem accelerator of the LAEC, probed the bulk material for the first 3-5 μ m depth from the surface. The simulations of the different obtained spectra, using the Simnra program, were done and showed satisfactory results. In addition, the microprobe of the 6 MV EN Tandem at the Ruder Boskovic Institute of Zagreb was used too to scan laterally, some of the samples, for N content in the bulk for almost 20-30 μ m.
