The Role of Roundabouts in Traffic Network Design
Roundabouts are being increasingly implemented in the design of road networks. Usually, the roundabouts reduce the number of traffic accidents, the transportation costs and the adverse effect on the traffic safety. However, there are also some negative effects of roundabouts, such as the decrease in the average driving speed, limited capacity, longer travelling time and inefficient co-ordination of the main traffic flows. Besides, roundabouts result in additional unnecessary intersecting of the traffic flows (excessive interweaving). Therefore, the implementation of roundabouts needs to be studied from the physical and urban, and especially from the traffic point of view.
