Another way to prove tunnel support stability
In structural mechanics, the concept of ultimate state is the leading way to design the engineering structures. Similar principle can also be applied to verification of the tunnel support stabilzy. The failure of a compound structure occurs if the support reaches its ultimate loading capacity. Therefore, the ultimate state of the compound structure is given by ultimate support loading capacity, which means by ultimate stresses and deformation of the support, depending on form, dimensions and mechanical properties of the support. So, instead of control of the stresses in doubtfull compound structure loaded by an arbitrary loading, only the stresses in rock have to be proved for the case where the rock is loaded at the boundary of the oppening with ultimate possible support reactions.
