Control of weeds in potato using a mixture of flufenacet and metribuzin
Flufenacet N-(4-fluorophenyl)-N-(s- methylethyl)-2-[5-trifluoromethyl)-1, 3, 4- thiadiazol-2yl)oxy] acetamide (FOE 5043) is a relatively new low rate oxiacetamide herbicide which was synthesized in 1998. Its potential as a multicrop pre-emergence graminicide was quickly recognized. FOE 5043 successfully controls numerous important grass weeds such as Echinochloa crus-galli, Setaria spp., Digitaria sanguinalis and can be used selectivity in maize, cereals, soybeans, cotton, sunflowers and potato. FOE 5043 is particularly effective when applied before emergence or in the early post- emergence stage. Flufenacet is extremely suitable as mixing partner for metribuzin (Sencor) in soybeans and potatoes. During three years (1996-1998) four field trials were carried out in potato. FOE 5043 (flufenacet 60%) was not tested as single compound. The ready mixtures FOE 5043 & Sencor (flufenacet 24% + metribuzin 17, 5%) = Plateen WG 41, 5 and Axiom WG 68 (flufenacet 54, 4% + metribuzin 13, 6%) were tested at four different locations. Both products have proved to be a very good or excellent selective control of a wide array of annual grasses and small-seeded dicot weeds.
