The Ragusan Republic and Western Europe: Sea as a Medium of Language Contact
The Ragusan Republic (present-day Dubrovnik) was situated at the intersection of two worlds, the sea opening up possibilities of contact with the West, and the hinterland opening its way to the East. It was by using the position of mediators between the East and the West that Ragusans built the prosperity of their city-state, whose beginnings can be traced back to the 7th century, and which disappeared from the historical scene at the turn of the 19th century. This paper outlines the history of language contacts in the Ragusan Republic and explores linguistic consequences of contacts between Dubrovnik and Western Europe primarily occurring through channels of trade and navigation.
