The problems of IRM research
The value of the concept of International Retirement Migration is unquestionable in the field of the field of policy research. The concept and the research that resulted point not only to the social problems of the migrants involved and their new environment but also to the connection of the social systems of different national societies in transnationalising European political surroundings (e.g. health and welfare system), local development, environmental planning, identity formation in a foreign setting etc. However, the concept of IRM can hardly be used as a building block of theory because it can hardly be generalised or transmitted to even similar cases in a similar setting and because the explanative elements of the concept gave their way to the descriptive ones. It is the phenomenological characteristics of the migrants that are used for the formation of the concept of IRM and not the explanative process or practices. Further on the concept of IRM is formulated in the operationalizing tradition of social research. This tradition is concerned with turning concepts into variables, with identifying the key concepts to be used in a particular study in order to define them and to develop ways of measuring them. Very important result of the formation of the IRM concept is the identification and description of the dimensions though the precise definitions of variables that constitute these dimensions were not identified unambiguously.
