A low energy conceot in a residance air-conditioning: design, modelling and optimization

An approach to heating and cooling system optimization is presented by an example project of an air-conditioning system for a residence situated in a coastal region of north Adriatic. An existing house was renewed and provided with additional thermal insulation at outside surfaces. Thickness of the insulation layer was determined on a basis of minimal total heating cost during the considered time of 50 years, considering oil fuelled boiler and a heat pump as alternative heating systems. Windows with increased air-tightness, including glass with low heat transfer coefficient and low thermal radiation transmission coefficient were used. Heating and cooling load were thus decreased significantly. The air-conditioning system was designed using air-to air heat pump for heating and cooling. The possibility for system expansion for solar energy utilization is provided as well. Air distribution was provided through air-ducts which were incorporated into a new insulation layer of an example house. Energy consumption has been measured during several years’ operation of a system, and measurements’ results confirm estimated consumption. Further simulations have been performed in order to investigate the feasibility of solar collector’ s application. Results of simulations encourage the design and the construction of air solar collector field which will be incorporated into a roof and connected with an air-conditioning system.
