Development and Optimization of a Marble Heating Plate Using Numerical Simulation

The paper presents the investigation performed during the design of an electrically heated marble plate used for the room heating. Numerical analysis and optimization of the plate is performed in order to achieve optimal plate geometry and uniform temperature distribution, to avoid damage of the plate caused by thermal stresses and to investigate possibilities of energy cost savings by storing heat in a plate with increased mass. A dynamic numerical model of an electrically heated plate is developed and presented. The finite volume method is used to solve the set of differential equations for thermal diffusion. Boundary conditions were achieved numerically for the case of the heat transfer by radiation and convection, with airflow induced by natural convection in a heated room. Original software is developed for the model implementation on computer. The spatial variations of temperature are predicted at each point in time for the plate. The software for determination of optimal heating wire placement is developed as well. Numerical results of simulations are presented in a graphical form. Measurements are performed in order to confirm simulation data. Simulation results and measurements are favorably compared for steady state and transient heating operation.
