Metonymy behind grammar: The motivation of the seemingly “ irregular” grammatical behaviour of paragon names
It will be improved on the basis of the reactions I receive and on the basis of further research on this topic by our research team. In the first part, I will report and briefly comment on some of earlier contrastive studies on the metaphor networks in certain emotional domains in English and Spanish. The second part, which consists of two brief case studies, addresses the main focus of the article, namely, the study of the extent to which the same conceptual metaphors are conventionalized in each of these two languages, and the different lexical/idiomatic and grammatical realizations of these metaphors in them. The third part is devoted to presenting some general conclusions, drawn from the first two sections, about the methodology to be followed in the contrastive study of metaphor and about its relevance for language learning, translation and interlinguistic lexicography.
