A Contribution to Computer Application in Timber Structural Design

This paper describes the aspects of the development of computer use during last years in the CE profession and the education process in CE schooling. This is a view on the beginning of IT introduction to the CE profession in Croatia, in which we have taken just a small part. At the beginning there were hand calculations, calculators, desktop computers, mainframe computers with punched cards, magnetic tapes (and before that punched ribbons), and now there are PC-s, nets of PC machines linked in WEB, GRID, Internet and Intranets, rule based and neural network expert systems, CAD-CAM processes, robot employments, VR and distributed cooperative work in AEC engineering tasks, the IT complex. All that was gradually closely implemented in the educational work, firstly in the seminal works in the subject Massive Bridges (held by Prof. Tonković and Žagar) at the FCE Zagreb (in 1971.), then especially in the education of the subject Bearing Structures (Žagar) at the University Interfaculty Traffic and Transportation Study, the Theory of structures subject held at FCE in Split (Žagar/Nižetić) and Osijek (Žagar), as well in the similar subject at the Faculty of Mining Engineering (RGN) at Zagreb (Žagar), and then in the Timber Engineering subject at the FCE Zagreb (Žagar) and FCE Osijek (Takač). The 3rd years students were in the Timber structure subjects doing not only the FEM (CAD) design and analysis of plane (2D) and spatial (3D) timber structures and analysis if joints of members, but even the whole formal convential CAD-oriented design projects but even the scaled (timber) models of the designed structures. Some even doing experimentation with expert systems (ES), particularly the neural network (ANN) training and practical applications oh its. And some of the students were testing some of the designed joints and even some parts and elements of the designed timber (end even polimer) structures. To day this IT oriented education is a common way of education in most of the subjects thought at the CEF Zagreb and Osijek, as well in others CE faculties in Croatia.
