Sažetak
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of intramammary treatment protocol based on a postive California Mastitis Test (CMT) result within the first three days post calving. In addition, the effect of early antibiotic therapy on cure rates linear somatic cell score (LS) and milk production for the first three Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) tests post calving was assessed. Total of 561 cows (1861 quarters) from 24 commercial herds were enrolled in the study. Within three days after calving (3 days in milk, DIM) all quarters from each cow were tested by veterinarian or dairy producer using the CMT, and sampled asepticaly for bacteriology test. Cows with positive CMT results were randomly assigned to receive either intramammary (IMM) cephapirin sodium, or no treatment. All CMT positive cows were sampled for bacteriological culture twice more (10-16 DIM, and 17-23 DIM) to determine cure of infections. Cure rates for major pahogens for the control and treated group was 63, 5% and 77.3% respectively and was not significant. Cure rates for the environmental streptococcal infections form the control and treated group were 68.2 and 86.8 respectively, indicating a tendency towards significance. Cows that cured a major pathogen had a decrease in linear score. When milk production was evaluated we observed that as the CMT score increased, sows had a 2.1 kg decrease in milk production per test date. Antibiotic treatment had no significant difference on LS or milk production by the third test date. There remains a need for a method to rapidly identify the causative agent of intramammary infections.
