Geotechnical Constraints on the Feasibility of Waste Disposal in Salt Caverns
The need for storage space for oil and gas, and repositories for oil-field and industrial waste have stimulated development of subsurface storage & disposal technologies during past six to seven decades. Salt cavern disposal is technically founded on petroleum engineering, geology, geotechnology and geochemistry. This paper discusses geotechnical constraints on solution-mined disposal cavern location, cavern design and geometry as well as barrier efficiency with respect to the nature of the waste considered for the disposal. The conclusions and observations made in the article are based firmly on extensive laboratory, field, and modeling experience in salt rocks.
