Evaluation of the reparative capacity of rat pulp by diagnostic measurement of bioelectrical pulp potential

Objective: To evaluate histologically reparative capacity of pulp in the procedure of calcium hydroxide - Ca(OH)2 rat molar pulpotomy on the basis of bioelectrical pulp potential (BPP). Materials and methods: 23 albino rats were divided into 3 experimental groups. 23 upper first molars served as a control and 23 lower first molars as experimental teeth. In the experimental groups pulps were exposed, BPP measured (EED11 , Struja Zagreb, Croatia) and teeth left open in the 1st group 5 days, in the 2nd 15 days and in the 3rd group 28 days. Pulpotomy was then performed, BPP measured and teeth restored with Ca(OH) 2 - Calxyl , zinc-phosphate and amalgam. In the control group, on the same day, pulpotomy followed by BPP measurement was performed and teeth restored in the same manner. Animals were sacrificed following pulpotomy in the 1st group after 5 days, in the 2nd after 21 days and in the 3rd after 90 days, and teeth prepared for HE analysis. Results: In the control group 80% teeth had "normal" and 20% increased BPP. Exposed teeth had changed BPP. In the 1st group 60% had increased, 20% "normal" and 20% decreased BPP. In the 2nd group 71% had increased, 14.5% "normal" and 14.5 % decreased BPP. In the 3rd group 73% had decreased and 27% increased BPP (p< 0.05, Run-test). Teeth with "normal" BPP in 22 cases (88%) had formed complete tubular dentin bridge (score 2), 8% had irregular or incomplete dentin bridge (score 1) and 4% had no dentin bridge (score 0). Teeth with higher BPP in 70% cases had score 0, 20% score 1 and 10% score 2. Teeth with lower BPP in 18% cases had score 0, 27% score 1 and 55% score 2 (p<0.05, t-test). Conclusion: BPP is an indicator of reparative capacity of pulp.
