Distribution of Cs-137 in fir-tree (Abies alba) from Gorski Kotar
The distribution of 137Cs among different parts of Abies alba at three sites located in the area of Gorski Kotar was studied. The samples of needles grown on branch segments of different age, bark and tree rings of the trunk at the height of 8 m were taken. Activities of 137Cs were determined using gamma-spectrometry method. In all samples the activity of 137Cs ascends in needles grown on younger branch segments and it is the highest in needles from the tips of the branches. The rise of activity of 137Cs in needles from older to the youngest branch segments does not show linear trend. The comparison between the distribution of 137Cs in needles and the bark was made as well as the comparison between tree rings and the bark at the height of 8 m. The ascending trend of 137Cs activity toward younger samples, both for needles and the bark, was observed. The acitivites are higher in the bark. A regular interdependance between 137Cs activity in needles and the bark was also observed. 137Cs activities in tree rings are found to be uniform, with small variations, in all tree rings. A great rise of 137Cs activity occurs in the bark where the activity can be 15 times higher than in tree rings. It can be observed that the distribution of 137Cs is equal at all locations for the same type of samples.
