Stroke Risk Factors: Recent Evidence and New Aspects
Stroke as an acute medical emergency called "brain attack" represents disease of the circulatory system caused by rupturing or blockage of an artery. Recent data have shown that about 72-86 % of strokes are ischemic, 9-18 % are caused by hemorrhage while the rest are undefined. Stroke is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, representing a huge public health concern, because of its high morbidity and long-term disability. It is the third most common cause of death after cardiovascular disease and cancer. Trend of its death rate reduction is observed in many European countries, as well as in North America. This decrease is probably multifactorial. Risk factors for ischemic strokes are multiple and combined (age, hypertension, cigarette smoking, atrial fibrillation, hyperlipidemia, diabetes). Detection and more effective treatment of risk factors as well as improved acute medical care and improvement in diagnostic procedures may play an important role in its prevention.
