Mixed Liquid Crystalline Phase Formation in Mixtures of Cationic and Anionic Surfactants
Interactions occurring in mixtures of cationic and anionic surfactants can be generally discussed with respect to mixed micelles formation in the high excess of one of the surfactant and the cationic surfactant precipitation at equimolar conditions. At moderate excess of one of the surfactant the heterogeneous mixtures of solid crystalline catanionic surfactant and mixed liquid crystalline phase coexist. The mixed liquid crystalline phase is composed of both anionic and cationic surfactant and counterion of surfactant in the excess. Its appearance as lamellar droplets (vesicles) may be explained by the increase of electrostatic repulsion at bilayer surface.
