Traffic safety and tourism development
This work analyses the influence of the traffic service quality, i.e. traffic flow safety on the tourism demand. Safety in traffic directly improves the satisfaction, i.e. reduces the risk of travelling and increases the competitive advantages of the tourism destinations. Since about 95 per cent of foreign tourists who visit Croatia use road transport means, the safety of road transport is an important variable in the choice of tourism destinations in Croatia. The work analyses the theoretical model of traffic safety, then the level of traffic safety quality in Croatia and its contribution to the increase of competitiveness of the Croatian tourism in relation to the neighbouring countries. Based on the performed analysis, one may conclude that regarding the number of traffic accidents and the resulting number of the injured, Croatia has an inferior position compared to the countries which have a competitive tourism offer (e.g. Italy, Greece, Spain). This means that, in accordance with the theoretical model of selecting a tourism destination, with other variables remaining the same, the European tourists will prefer her competitors, even if the transportation costs are higher. Therefore, the improvement of the traffic safety in Croatia is important for strengthening the competitive advantages of tourism and for realising its basic objectives.
