Activation of carbonic anhydrase in branchial cavity tissues of lobster Homarus gammarus conditioned by salinity

The activity and distribution of carbonic anhydrase (CA) in the branchial cavity tissues have been studied in the lobster Homarus gammarus from ambient seawater (38 ppt) and dilute seawater (20 ppt). In DSW acclimated lobsters, almost 70% of the total CA in tisssues of the branchial cavity was found in epipodites, and the rest was equally distributed between branchiostegites and gills. In subcellular fractions from DSW acclimated lobsters, the main proportions of 75.8% in epipodites and 61.0% in branchiostegite of the total CA activity remained in the cytosol portion. Partially purified membranes contained only 6.8% and 16.2% CA, respectively in epipodites and branchiostegite. A slight activation of CA in homogenates and in partially purified membranes of gills was not confirmed as a statistically significant difference between the SW and DSW groups. These results for the first time indicate the importance of epipodites and branchiostegites in the CA induction when lobsters are acclimated to DSW, Moreover, results provide a knowledge to disclose problems applied to mariculture and protection of lobster's population in marine habitats.
