Servey of voluminous forage crops growing in Croatia
Environmental conditions in Croatia are suitable for a varied crop production.Meadows and pasture lands occupied in total 1.57 million ha or 49 % of agricultural land capacity (status of 1991) in Croatia and they are main aource of feed. However, yields are relatively low, especially on pastures (only 0.45 t/ha).Absence of fertilization or very moderate fertilization are main reason for this situation.Alfalfa and clovers were grown on 112000 ha and these two crops have share in total hay production in level of 30 %, while their share in harvested area is about 7 % of agricultural land.In this study was shown survey of voluminous forage crops growing in Croatia and our experiences in improvement of alfalfa hay and protein yield under environmental conditions of the Eastern Croatia.
