Structure and Properties of Nanocomposites Prepared by In Situ Polymerization as the New Materials in Adhesive Products
Nanocomposite behavior is determined by different factors such as influence of particle size and shape, dispersion quality and interfacial interactions between filler and matrix. Agglomeration of nanoparticles caused an additional problem in a nanocomposite preparation. For that purposes the effect of the dispersion of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanofiller in poly(vinyl acetate) matrix on the interfacial interactions, mechanical and thermal properties was investigated in this study. Properties of composites prepared by in situ polymerization of PVAc in a presence of CaCO3 nanofiller were compared with composites prepared by simple mixing procedure. Contact angle measurement was used for the surface characterization of the filler and matrix. The interfacial phenomena such are work of adhesion, interfacial free energy and coefficient of wetting were determined. The improved mechanical and other properties are found in composites with a better dispersion of nanoparticles as a result of strong interfacial interactions between matrix and filler, and formation of three-dimensional interphase with a significant amount of matrix with restricted mobility.
