Interfacial Phenomena in Particulate Filled Blends and Composites
Interfacial area or interphase exerts a critical effect on the behaviour of composites and blends. In the particulate filled multifunctional materials the controlled treatment of filler surface change the adhesion parameters at the interphase.Throughout the presentation we will demonstrate the examples of blend and composites filled with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) filler particles of nanosized dimensions (< 100nm), previously pre-treated with sodium stearate. The organic coating of sodium sterate on the surface of CaCO3 could act as a coupling agent between filler and matrix and change the interactions in the interfacial area 1. The goal was to investigate how the structural changes and the changes of the filler surface energy after the controlled pre-treatment will influence on the interfacial free energy and other adhesion parameters in immiscible blends of styrene-co-acrylonitrile/ethylene propylene diene (SAN/EPDM) and in poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) composites filled with the CaCO3 nanofillers. The various experimental tools were used for the filler surface characterization (FTIR and XPS) ; for the analysis of blend and composite morphology (SEM with X-ray analyser), along with the mechanical testing.
