The Design and Construction of the Oriel in Multi-storey Buildings by Enclosing Open-space Extensions in a Flat
Many houses used for a variety of purposes were destroyed during the war in Croatia. The primary aim of the Government’ s project was to help displaced citizens return to their houses/flats. Since there was no proper survey to establish the needs of future tenants before the renewal, tenants have had to adapt their habits to the spatial structuring of various types of flats. In view of this, a large number of these tenants have already enclosed or plan to enclose loggias, balconies and terraces, thereby creating a variety of projections and extensions, which were not an option in the architect’ s original groundplan and which, stylistically, belong to another age. Two types of extensions seem to have precedence in this spontaneous trend: the oriel window and the bay window. Since the construction of extensions has not been carried out systematically, the façades appear unfinished and incomplete. The question is whether to approach this problem in an organised, systematic fashion or to leave this to sort itself out in a self-regulating manner, which is what happened in the past.
