Architecture and Modernization to the City
After the mid- 19th century the modernization of Zagreb preceeded at a very rapid pace. Modernisation of Zagreb commences with concious urban planning which, as we have seen, saw the city as an industrial centre, once its lines of communication are improved. The starting points of this development were the amalgamation of two medieval cores with their newer parts. The urban development envisaged in the Regulatory Plan of 1887 was based on artistic principles, and resulted in the creation of a monumental frame of the Lower Town - the so-called "Green Horseshoe"-a magnificent setting for the shrines of national culture, science and education.
