Evaluation of degree of corrosion of alkyd primers in conformity with ASTM D610 and ASTN D714
The degree to which paint films absorb or are permeable to moisture is influenced by the nature of the polymer and depends, to a lesser extent, on the nature and degree of pigmentation (PVC). The use of corrosion-suppressing primers is by far the most widely used method for protecting steel, and it is now universally accepted that the protection afforded by any primer as influenced by the condition of the surface to which it is applied. Resistance to weather (weather-resistance or durability) is probably the aspect of performance which has received most attention. In this study, two types of alkyd primers applied on prepared steel panels. In order to evaulate the performance of these primers related to the loss of their barrier properties, Corrosion Cycling Test Chamber, were carried out. In order to obtain results in a reasonable time, the primers were subjected to accelerated tests as one-coat or two-coat systems. Two tests are commonly applied, involving exposure to conditions of high humidity and condensation and continous salt spray. Evaluation of degree of rusting and blistering was in conformity with ASTM D610 and ASTM D714. The result in Alternating Climate Test Chamber type SC 450 showed a good resistance in saline environment of one type of paint systems tested, while the other showed blisters with rust all over the surface.
