Dense water generation on the North Adriatic shelf (Mediterranean Sea)
The paper encompasses recent investigations made on the preconditioning, generation and spreading of North Adriatic Dense Water (NAdDW) which occurs on the shallow and broad northern Adriatic shelf during years with large winter heat losses and low river discharges. Transient analyses of NAdDW dynamics were based primarily on the 1999 event and existing literature, while the climatology was computed in 1967-2000 interval, as long-term hydrographic measurement had been carried out at regular stations in the area. Although it has a low volume compared to the other Adriatic water masses, NAdDW is rather important for the renewal and ventilation of bottom waters in the Middle and South Adriatic, bringing freshly oxygenized waters and nutrients in the area, and impacting the whole biogeochemical cycle in the Adriatic Sea.
