ADRIATIC-TELE-DOC Telemedicine Project

"Telemedicine care" allows for consultation with all leading experts anywhere in Croatia (Europe) in order to reach fast and reliable diagnosis as well as proper choice of therapy (e.g., laboratory findings, x-ray images, ECG recordings, etc.). High quality visual contact with the patient will enable the physician, expert consultant, the 'remote control', while providing the patient with the highest quality medical care, especially in emergencies. Considering the isolation of Adriatic islands in terms of communication, along with difficulties encountered on providing health care measures on these islands, we do believe that upgrading of the basic health standards for islanders as well as for the many Croatian and foreign turists during the summer is one of the main preconditions for the maintenance and improvement of living conditions in the area. This mode of 'collaboration at distance' reduces the need of expensive and sometimes unfeasible transportation (especially by helicopter) of patients, for example, from an island to a hospital and back. All economic studies of the 'telemedicien project' point to the appropriate cost – effectiveness of this form of providing health care. In this way, physicians at dislocated medical units (e.g., small medical centers) can easily come in contact with the leading experts in clinical medicine anywhere in Croatia and Europe, which implies greater help in their professional and above all scientific activities. At the same time, this form of providing health care may hopefully help arrest the medical staff drain from these units and areas, as their working conditions would also greatly improve, stimulating further development of the medical profession in general.
