” Can virtual environment technology assist students, residents and surgeons in training and maintaining a new skills in rhinosinusology?” Traditionally, during teaching process, students obtained S.C. “ descriptive visual information” per viam currently available teaching tools. The modern explosive growth in the interactive visualization and navigation through the CT, MRI data as well as the real anatomy of human body, with development of dynamic image- guidance systems, has created an increasing need for completely new educational approaches in the teaching. Different products, available today, contain en extensive help, which may assist in this process. The new teaching approach in rhinology, developed in my practice, showed unlimited advantages in comparison with similar standard techniques of teaching. Our new lectures, created as the multimedia video atlas, provide completely new vision in navigation through the different pathology in the nose and paranasal sinuses. Also, the possibility offered to undergraduate and postgraduate students and residents, contain the navigation through every case report or whole presentation, created as computerized lecture presented per viam LCD. Virtual endoscopy through all presented case reports, the interactive view of whole text, figures and tables, as well as the possibility of creation of new surgical approaches, printing or dynamic search through the whole lecture, is provided. Every part of the presentation is changeable interactively during the presentation itself. Also, all data can be stored in different ways, recorded and given for the purpose of research, investigation or teaching. Different cases are shown in mentioned computerized lectures, such as the acute and chronic rhinosinusitis with main immunological and biochemical characteristics of every case, inverting palillomas, endoscopic visualization of all structures in the anatomy of the nose, paranasal sinuses and surrounding areas. Also, the main diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in rhinosinusology are explained, i.e. sinusoscopy, functional endoscopic sinus surgery, 3D-computer assisted endoscopic sinus surgery and virtual navigation through the surgical field. Every case presented as live video image and volume rendered (3D) model offers the possible interactive investigation from different aspects of view, in real time. This approach, according to our opinion, gives complete information about various procedures of the care of patients with extensive or unusual diseases in rhinosinusology. Preoperative evaluations and planning, different surgical approaches and postoperative care are discussed.
