The catch of sport fishing as an indicator of the state of nase populations (Chondxostoma nasus) in Slovenia
In Slovenia, Chondrostoma nasus occurred originally in streams of the Danube drainage area (Black Sea basin). After 1960, it was also introduced into streams emptying into the Adriatic Sea Anglers' statistics show that, in the period 1956-1984, yields of the nase were increasing. However since 1984, catches of this species have begun to drop both in number and weight. The yield ir 1984 was 158,000 specimens and 796 t. It dropped to 50,000 specimens and 41.4 t by 1994. The catch decrease of nase occurred in all water bodies, in particular in the River Drava catchment area. Various stream modification (dams, reservoirs, weirs, channelization, gravel extraction, and others are the main cause of this unfavourable development in the status of C. nasus population and subsequently also of catches.
