How to prevent photosmog episodes
Photosmog is a type of air pollution first observed in the 1940s in the Los Angeles area. It results from reactions of nitrogen oxides, oxygen, hydrocarbons and other oxidizable molecules under the influence of sunlight, and manifests itself in reduced visibility, irritation of eyes, allergyc reactions and demage to vegetation and materials. Photosmog episodes are associated with densely populated and industrialized areas with high insolation. The pollutants can be transported, under favourable atmospheric conditions, over a considerable distance. The reasons, consequences, ways of assessment of photosmog formation and suggestions for possible improvement will be elaborated.
