Prediction of Perceptual Speech Quality from Bit Error Rate and Received Signal Quality Measurements in GSM Mobile Networks
The objective of this paper is to describe an efficient and simple method for prediction of perceptual speech quality in the GSM mobile networks. The method is based on bit error rate (BER) and quantizied RXQUAL (Received Signal Quality) measurements. This method is not intrusive and gives the network operator the oportunity for evaluation of the transmission speech quality during actual operation. The mathematical models are developed that can predict sound quality index from mean of 10 BER measurements, or from its quantizied RXQUAL value. Those polynomial expressions are developed on the basis of more than 100000 measurement samples, acquired in HT Cronet GSM mobile network with the help of Ascom Qvoice equipment.
