Variations in mortality in Middle Dalmatia, Croatia
Based on data from an epidemiological-longitudinal study, which started in 1969, with follow-ups in 1972 and 1982, we estimated survival and hazard functions in coastal cities of Split and Omiš, Croatia, from 1972 to 1997. Log-rank test showed significant difference between survival functions for both gender (p=0.0001) and city (p=0.0246). The difference between the cities was significant within the female cohort (p=0.0239), but not within the male cohort (p=0.2889). The estimates of hazard ratio based on the Cox-regression model indicated that the men had 73% greater hazard than the women, and Omiš had 35% greater hazard than Split. One year difference in the age at the beginning of the study was estimated to change the hazard by 11%.
