Comparative Stress Analysis Around an Elliptic Opening in Thin Cylinder
In this work is analysed a thin cylinder weakened by a longitudinal elliptic opening, under axial compression. The stresses around the opening are defined by proposed analytical solution based on the theory of thin cylindrical shells, and the application of complex variable functions and conformal mapping. Iteration method is used. The experimental results are obtained by the 3D photoelastic frozen stress method. The cylinder model was made of Araldite B. On the basis of analytical and experimental solutions, the stress ratio curves around the opening are comparatively drawn, the analysis was done and the stress concentration factors were established. The observed differences are small.
