Casimir force between dispersive magnetodielectrics
Employing the macroscopic field operators appropriate for absorbing magnetodielectric systems and deriving a convenient form of the relevant Green function, we extend our approach to the Casimir effect between two dielectric stacks of layers [M. S. Tomas, Phys. Rev. A 66, 052103 (2002)] to magnetodielectric systems. We use the resulting expression for the force to numerically explore the effect of the medium dispersion on the attractive/repulsive force in a metal-magnetodielectric system described by the Drude-Lorentz permittivities and permeabilities. With small modifications, our simulations confirm the conclusions drawn from a nondispersive model by Kenneth et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 033001 (2002)] regarding the material dependence of the force. Concerning the distance dependence of the force, they indicate that the Casimir force in a realistic system comprising a good metal is always attractive at micron and submicron distances, thus confirming claims of Iannuzzi and Capasso [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 029101 (2003)], and that it changes to repulsive at a much smaller distance than one would expect from a common estimate.
