Spatial distribution of dolinas and its significance for groundwater protection in karst terrain
This paper describes an EC 5th Framework programme project, the main scientific and technological objective of which is the assessment of anthropogenic pollution and its consequences to the karst ecosystem in a border zone between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our contribution to this objective is the definition of geometry, and development of a hydrogeological model of the Una River and its catchments drain the area and as the main drainage outlets are in Bosnia, the extension into two countries requires mutual effort and activity for the protection of this valuable resource. Because the whole investigated area is built mostly of well permeable carbonate rocks, the terrain with the different risk level was differentiated by using the morphologic characteristics, the sinkholes (dolinas) density compared to the terrain dip, and by integrating the obtained values with the permeability of individual lithological units, which is the most distinct hydrogeological characteristics of the media. Such procedure enables the separation of the zones of lower and higher vulnerability within the well permeable deposits, from the aspect of the groundwater protection.
