Initiatives for Tourism Sustainable Development at the Regional Level

In today’ s insufficiency of healthy environment, the loss of cultural heritage, future attractive destinations will be those areas with tourist concept based on principles of sustainable development. To achieve Sustainable development (aimed at a combination of economic, social and environmental goals), one of the most important rules is to give priority to natural capital stock rather than to the flow of income. This concept is the basis for sustainable tourism – to achieve tourist revenue, but also to save natural capital stock, in other words to bring together preservation and development. There is a need to define the role of state, local authorities and private owner in maintenance of natural and cultural historical heritage. In the paper the author attempt to give directions for development of tourism at the regional level on the principles of sustainable development. As a sustainable nature based tourism is defined ecotourism, as well as countryside tourism and tourism of adventure. They are a tool for benefiting both fragile ecosystems and local communities. Sustainable economic development involves maximising the net benefits of economic development and maintaining quality of natural resources over time. Systemic shaping of ecotourism in Croatia has been insufficient. Going to the insufficiently defined and evaluated ecotourism product, the market promotion of ecotourism Croatian products has been made difficult. In the new Croatian tourist strategy and regional tourist product creation the accent should be on new selective forms of supply with numerous ecotourism activities, countryside tourism and tourism of adventure, which will change the current tourist supply structure, increase tourism expenditure, prolong the season and increase the number of overnight stays.
