Detection of Listeria monocytogenes in various foods
The recognition that listeriosis can have very serious consequences made it necessary to make more efforts in development of analytical methods for isolation and identification. The present study on the presence of Listeria monocytogenes included a total of 635 samples of wide variety of foods. The presence of Listeria monocytogenes was tested by enzyme immuno assay (TECRA, Lisvia, Roseville, Australia) and standard methods were applied for isolation (ISO 11 290-1:1996 and ISO 11 290-2:1998). Biochemical features of the isolated strains were assesed by the BBL Crystal Gram-Positive ID Kit (Becton Dickinson). Our results show low contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, as well as with other members of genus Listeria, which is in correlation with the low occurence of listeriosis in our country.
