Vibration Analysis of Triplex Mud Pumps on Drilling Rig
The drilling rig Zagreb 1 is equipped with three triplex mud pumps. One of them is placed on weak foundations and is exposed to a higher vibration level, which has resulted with fracture of the bolts of the crankshaft bearings. Vibrations of the pumps and their foundations are measured in order to focus the vibration problem. Also, vibrations of the pump compartment at the lower deck with the surrounding structure and pumps are analyzed by means of the finite element method. Since the pump excitation is not known, its value is assumed , and the relative forced vibrations are considered. The calculated value of a resonant vibration of the second order pump excitation agrees very well with the measured result. The structure of the lower deck below the damaged pump has been reinforced and in such a way vibration have been reduced to an acceptable level. The reduction of vibration level is based on the correlation of responses of the pump and the surrounding structure to the unit excitation before and after the reinforcement of the lower deck.
