Role of inheritance on P status in corn grain
The major portion of the P taken into the early shoot, stalk, leaves and tassel are translocated into grain. No recently published data exist about genetic variability and combining ability of P status in grain of elite corn material. The objectives of this study were to analyze genetic variation of 28 maize diallel crosses and estimate combining ability of the eight parents for P status in the grain. There were highly significant differences among the 28 crosses for P status in grain in the analysis of variance. P concentrations ranged from 278 to 376 mg kg-1 with the overall mean of 333 ± ; 2 mg kg-1. Hereditary principles of P status in grain are complex due to significant both general and specific combining abilities of corn genotypes. Non-additive gene action appears to be of more importance in the inheritance of P content, indicating difficulties in possible enhancement of the P status in grain by classical breeding.
