Comparing genetic diversity and combining ability for mineral content in kernels of elite maize inbred lines
Recently, mineral deficiencies have been recognized as a major nutritional problem especially in many developing countries. One sustainable agricultural approach to reducing it is to enrich major staple food crops with minerals through plant breeding. The objective of this study is to compare genetic diversity and combining ability for mineral concentrations in kernels of divergent elite inbred lines of maize. According to Euclidean distance, SSR markers failed to place genotypes into correct maize dent pools. Interestingly, Euclidean 'mineral' distance shows much more accurate relationship among inbred lines presumed by pedigree. Therefore, more efficient statistical procedure is needed in order to show more realistic relationships among inbreds according to genetic distance.
