Persisting insomnia and psychiatric disorders
Insomnia is an experience of inadequate or poor-quality sleep characterized by one or more of the following problems: difficulty failing asleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, waiking up too early in the morning and sleep that is not refreshing. Insomnia also involves daytime consequences such as fatigue, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating and irritability. Psychiatric disorders are a common cause of chronic insomnia. In recent years studies have suggested the emergence of changing perspective on the management of chronic insomnia in psychiatric patients. The article review the advantages and disadvantages of medications employed to promote improved sleep. Special emphasis is given to use of newer-generation benzodiazepine receptor agonist hypnotics.
