Neurophysiological basis of verbotonal rehabilitation
The development of hearing and speech is not dependent only of the peripheral hearing function, but of entire spatioceptive status (touch, proprioception, vestibuloception, hearing and sight). If the peripheral entrance is enabled, the hearing is not achieved yet, because the central mechanisms have been inactive and have to « ; learn» ; how to transmit the acoustic information, how to clean and structure the signal. In the era of cochlear implantation, the hearing and speech rehabilitation has the task to do on central level the same what the technology did on the peripheral one. The recent functional MRI studies confirm the necessity of verbotonal approach to hearing and speech development. They suggest a large degree of adaptive rewiring may occur during brain development and rehabilitation.
