Evaluation of prosthodontic appliances by the CDA and the Nevalainen index in relation to organ system dysfunctions in elderly home residents

Objectives: Influence of health conditions concerning various organ systems on the state of existing prosthodontic appliances and the need for their replacement was the aim of investigation. Material and methods: Dental status and general health anamnesis were taken on a group of 150 elderly (&#8805; 60 years of age) home residents by trained examiners. State of prosthodontic appliances was evaluated according to the CDA index for the crowns and bridges, and the modified Nevalainen et al. index for complete dentures. Results: More than 82% of the subjects were in need of fixed, removable or combined prosthodontic treatment. The most common general health problem included locomotor and cardiovascular systems (18-29%, respectively). Correlation was determined between the chronic locomotor (r=0.69, p<0.05), psychological (r=0.88, p<0.05), neurological (r=0.72, p<0.05) and gastrointestinal diseases (r=0.65, p<0.05), and the poor state of prosthodontic appliances.The respiratory, genitourinary and endocrinological conditions had no statistically significant influence on the state of prosthodontic appliances. Conclusions: Some organ systems dysfunctions result in impairing the person's ability to maintain oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, thus significantly influencing the state of prosthodontic appliances.
