Comparison of three different AOTs for azo dye wastewater treatment

Advanced Oxidation Processes ( AOPs) have been used as emerging wastewater treatment technologies which can effectively handle various hazardous organics in wastestream and groundwater. Azo dyes are a group of special interest due to their high toxicity and low biodegradability. Standard chemical degradtion proceses such as reduction are not applicable because of byproduct generation (primary amines) which are even more toxic and carcinogenic. The decolorization and degradation of Mordant Yellow 10 (MY10) azo dye in water was investigated in laboratory-scale experiments, using three advanced oxidation processes : ozonation, peroxone and non- thermal plasma in order to remove color and decrease total organic content (TOC). Experiments were conducted on 75 ppm of MY 10 water solution with and without zeolite NH4ZSM5. Spectrophotometric measurements (UV/VIS) and instrumental measurements of total organic carbon(TOC) were used for determination of process efficiency. From the kinetic data the rate of reaction has been established. The time required for the total dye removal and observed pseudo-first order rate constants were used as parameters to show the efficiency of azo dye treatment.
