The Latest Archaeological discoveries in Croatia
The strength of the Roman civilisation was based upon the universe development of urban society. The historical and social process in which settlements were created, developed and conceived as urban centres (poleogenesis) still is an interesting subject whose appeal is increased by new discoveries and the re-examination of existing knowledge. It involves the entire scope theory and practice of town planning and building (Roman urbanism). Systematic archaeological excavations, archaeological rescue excavations were carried out in Roman provinces of Pannonia, Dalmatia and Histria (X Regio Italiae). Systematic archaeological excavations of Asseria (Podgrađe near Benkovac), Tilurium (Trilj), Burnum (Ivoševci near Kistanje), Pola (Pula), Iader (Zadar), Salona (Solin), Narona (Vid) et. c. brought to light the remains of Roman architecture and material finds. Results of archaeological rescue excavations of Vinkovci (Cibalae) brought to light the remains of Roman architecture from the first stage of urbanisation during Hadrian s rule. Archaeological rescue excavations are carried out each year in the towns of Vinkovci, Osijek (Mursa), Slavonski Brod (Marsonia). The choice of sites and numbers of excavations depends on the intensity of construction work carried in the towns during the year. The text also elaborates the newest research of Roman military amphitheatre of Burnum.
