Language processing problems: How central is the working memory functioning?
Last two decades were marked with an intensified research in the area of language pathology. Firstly, there was a switch from speech to language, and secondly, the focus in the area of language difficulties have been gliding from one being exclusively linguistic towards a more cognitive approach. This has resulted in both different theoretical accounts and establishing distinctive diagnostic criteria, such as specific language impairment vs. language impairment. The intention of this presentation is to consider the working memory system and its relation to different types of language problems that meet those diagnostic criteria. Relying on research data and their metaanalysis, it will be given some reasons, pros and cons which could be eligible for a particular type of language problems as well as the role of working memory components.
