Mechanisms of talc granulomatosis-induced bone loss in the rat
Inflammation provoked by subcutaneous (sc) implantation of nonspecific irritants, such as talc, was reported to induce a generalized bone loss in rats within 7 days after injection. The bone loss was due to an initial overall inhibition of bone cell proliferation and function. The bone forming cell inefficiency was observed to persist for about three weeks, while the function of osteoclasts recovered within five days after talc injection. In the present study we tried to ascertain whether inflammation-induced changes in zinc (Zn) metabolism could be pathogenetically involved in skeletal alterations in talc granuloma-bearing rats.
