Teaching scientific methodology at a medical school: experience from Split, Croatia

University of Split School of Medicine was founded in 1997 following its 19 years of existence as a branch college of the Zagreb Medical School. Becoming an independent School has enabled the construction of a new six years curriculum, which included more teaching hours for the scientific methodology at the second year. The course had 60 teaching hours, which included a "hands-on" approach. Students conducted a study, generated a manuscript, and presented the data at the meeting at the end of the course. This approach was a significant innovation with some effects already shown in the six years period. The data and our positive experience from the past six years suggest that including a longer course on the Principles of Scientific Research in Medicine early in the medical school curriculum, during the second year, may enhance not only the students` knowledge, but also their positive attitude toward science. Hopefully, in a long run, this will reflect on a greater productivity of our small medical scientific community and stimulate writing not only of our students, but also young doctors and their older peers.
