Anatomical and chemical adaptation of Spartium junceum L. on arid habitat
A number of anatomical adaptations to arid habitat can be noted in the description of microscopic structure of the Spartium junceum L. vegetative organs. The xerophitic adaptation of the leaf is described by short functioning and the transformation of its inner structure with dominating presence of palisade parenchyma. The top part of the stem has taken over the leaf function, while sclerenchyma fibre and conductive elements take most part of its secondary units. The primary structure of the root is specific for its incompletely developed endodermis, and the secondary structure points out its storage and mechanical role. The GC/MS analyses of the essential oils showed that these oils consisted mainly of monoterpene hydrocarbons with  -thujene being as the main compound. For this plant the essential oil also have xeromorphic role.
